Zero-based budgeting means giving every dollar a job until your income minus your planned spending equals zero. It is one of the most effective ways to stop money leaking out of your account each month.

How it works

List your income. Then assign every dollar to a category — bills, groceries, savings, debt, fun — until nothing is left unassigned. You are not spending it all; savings and debt payments are “jobs” too.

Why it works

When every dollar has a purpose, impulse spending has nowhere to hide. You see trade-offs clearly: an extra $50 on dining out is $50 less toward your goals.
