This is a roundup of what official statistical agencies and peer-reviewed research actually report about remote work, hybrid schedules, and the planning behaviour that surrounds them. Every figure is attributed to a named source and linked. Where the research is genuinely contested — as it is on the question of remote work and productivity — this page says so rather than picking the more quotable answer.
How common is working from home? Official EU data
Eurostat’s Labour Force Survey publishes an annual series on employed persons working from home, broken into three mutually exclusive categories: usually, sometimes, and never. For the EU-27 in 2025, among employed people aged 15–64:
- 8.8% usually worked from home
- 14.2% sometimes worked from home
- 77.0% never worked from home

The single most useful thing in this dataset is not the EU average but the spread between member states, which is very wide — a reminder that “remote work” is not one phenomenon but a set of national labour-market structures.

Finland’s rate is roughly fifteen times Romania’s. Any claim that begins “X% of workers now work from home” without naming a country and a definition is not a statistic — the number swings by an order of magnitude depending on both.
US data: the teleworkable subset
US survey work usually measures a different population — not all workers, but workers whose job can be done from home. That distinction explains most of the apparent contradiction between US and EU figures.
Pew Research Center, surveying 2,315 US employed adults with teleworkable jobs between 7 and 13 October 2024, found that 75% were working remotely at least some of the time. On the question of attachment to the arrangement, 46% said they would be unlikely to stay in their current job if their employer eliminated work from home — including 26% who said “very unlikely” — against 36% who said they would be likely to stay (Pew Research Center, January 2025).
Pew’s earlier work tracks the shift from fully remote to hybrid. Among workers with teleworkable jobs, the share working from home all of the time was 35% in early 2023, down from 43% in January 2022 and 55% in October 2020, while 41% were on a hybrid schedule (Pew Research Center, March 2023).
Read together, the EU and US series describe the same underlying structure: a minority of all jobs are teleworkable at all, and within that minority hybrid has displaced fully-remote as the dominant pattern.
The best available causal evidence on hybrid and performance
Most published claims about remote work and productivity are correlational — they compare people who chose to work remotely with people who did not, which cannot separate the effect of the arrangement from the characteristics of the person. There is one prominent exception worth citing precisely because it is a randomised controlled trial.
Bloom, Han and Liang ran a six-month randomised controlled trial with 1,612 employees at a Chinese technology company in 2021–2022, randomly assigning graduate employees to hybrid schedules. They report that hybrid working improved job satisfaction and reduced quit rates by one third, with the reduction concentrated among non-managers, female employees and those with long commutes. Null equivalence tests found no damage to performance. What the evidence does not support
Three claims circulate widely and are not supported by the sources above:
- “Remote workers are X% more productive.” The RCT above tested for damage and found none; it did not establish a general productivity gain, and one firm in one sector cannot generalise to all work.
- “Most people now work from home.” In the EU-27 in 2025, 77.0% of employed people never worked from home. The high percentages quoted in US reporting refer to the teleworkable subset only.
- “Hybrid is a temporary post-pandemic artefact.” Pew’s series shows fully-remote falling while hybrid rises — a change in composition, not a return to the prior baseline.
When you cite remote-work statistics, always state three things: the population (all workers or teleworkable workers), the geography, and the year. Omitting any one of them makes the figure unusable.
What this means for personal planning systems
The measurable finding in the strongest study is about retention and satisfaction, not raw output — and retention is downstream of things like commute time, autonomy over the working day, and boundary control between work and home. Those are precisely the variables a planning system can influence.
